Professional background

Extensive expertise in plastic surgery.

I have worked extensively with congenital anomalies, injuries and diseases of the face, breasts and body, as well as the after-effects of cancer. Particularly close to my heart has been my work at Husuke, HUS's cleft surgery unit, where developmental disorders of the face are treated in people of all ages, and often a nose or ear, for example, is rebuilt from the very beginning.

I have run a private practice since 2007, initially alongside hospital work, but today full-time. A truly significant professional experience for me was the fellowship I spent in 2012 at The Royal Free Hampstead in London and at several private hospitals, from which I gained an enormous amount of expertise and inspiration for aesthetic surgery.

I defended my doctoral thesis in 2017 on Meretoja disease (hereditary gelsolin amyloidosis), a progressive facial nerve paralysis that also involves abnormal drooping of the face and skin.

Science, continuing education and teaching younger colleagues have always been close to my heart. Regular training trips abroad are extremely important in this field, which has only a few specialists in Finland.

I am involved in international organisational work, and through this I have contributed to drafting, for example, the European guideline for the treatment of craniofacial microsomia.

I currently serve on the board of the Finnish Society of Plastic Surgeons (CPF) and as the second Finnish contact person for the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS).

What fascinates me about plastic surgery is the blending of science and art, and the opportunity to create quality of life and wellbeing while also often correcting difficult functional problems, such as heavy eyelids or breathing. The balance between a person's personality and facial features is important: finding it, and the visible improvement in quality of life that follows, is wonderfully rewarding. My goal is a visible but always natural and individual outcome.
